After several nail biting months of waiting to see if Asheville would be lucky enough to “win” the Google Fiber bid, we lost out to Kansas city :(. It seemed all was lost (at least for the time being) until now.

AT&T has announced plans to finally bring its ultra-fast, all-fiber, 1-gigabit Internet to our fine city! The potential is huge; tech industry opportunities, business innovations, educational opportunities and even just advanced speeds for the casual citizen. AT&T’s GigaPower Network is said to offer speeds of up to one gigabit per second. Movies, videos, music, Flash websites 🙂 … all will download in a fraction of the time it takes the average broadband connection currently.

In 2014 AT&T had announced the launch of GigaPower in the Triangle area of North Carolina and 8 months later their dream became a reality. By that rational we could have super Net speeds live by late summer! Current prices in Raleigh seem similar to what 60MBPS currently costs in Asheville with Charter.

Fingers crossed 🙂
