I guess sometimes I get tired of the digital life.

Don’t get me wrong, it is immensely fun creating digital tools to solve business probs. There’s nothing better that seeing an email ping arrive in your inbox signifying a Stripe payment for some client or receiving a request for more information on “what might be involved in ‘fixing my Laravel issues'”.

But there’s something special about having a home garden, especially when it’s filled with feathered and finned friends! Something that reminds me that this is what we as humans were really meant to be doing. Our little slice of heaven includes chickens for fresh eggs, a veggie patch for crisp produce, and a lake out back teeming with largemouth bass. It’s like having our own personal farmer’s market and seafood restaurant right in the backyard!

The chickens are the real stars of the show, strutting around like they own the place (oh wait, they do!). There’s nothing quite like collecting fresh eggs from the coop every morning (even if sometimes covered in fresh poop). And let me tell you, there’s no comparison to the taste of a homegrown tomato or shishito.

But the real pièce de résistance is the lake. There’s something so peaceful about sitting on the dock, watching the bass swim lazily beneath the surface. There’s nothing quite like the taste of fresh-caught fish, grilled to perfection on a summer evening – a very satisfying feeling that you’re providing your family with something different from most families. Something that you caught/harvested/grew …

Of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. There are days when the chickens refuse to lay, the veggies get eaten by pesky bugs (this is Florida after all), and the fish just aren’t biting. But that’s all part of the fun, right? It’s a journey, not a destination. And when everything comes together, it’s like winning the lottery.

It think it’s the balance of the old world and the new world that makes it all work. Too much new world and we become code-potatoes. Too much old world and we soon remember why we missed the fun of solving business problems with Laravel from the comfort of a cozy office, cup o Joe in hand.
